Kingston Area Recycling Centre

The Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) at 196 Lappan’s Lane offers several services to keep your items from going into the landfill.  

Recycling depot

Use our What Goes Where tool to help confirm what items are recyclable.  

Residents and businesses can bring these items for recycling at KARC: 

    • Any standard blue or green bin items that are recyclable 
    • Oversized cardboard 
    • Oversized white Styrofoam 
    • Small scrap metal  
    • Any standard blue or grey bin items 

Some items cannot be recycled in our regular depot due to safety risks. The following items are only accepted at the front office: 

    • Single-use batteries  
    • Compact fluorescent light bulbs (not tubes) 

Residents of Kingston can drop off their recycling items for free. A fee may apply for businesses, visit our business waste collection program to learn more.

  1. Drive onto the scale.
  2. Use the speaker to talk to the scale operator. Tell them what you are bringing and if you are a resident or a business.
  3. Follow the operator’s directions and go unload your items.
  4. After you are done unloading, go back to the scales to get weighed again.

  • Gift wrap or gift cards 
  • Styrofoam packing peanuts 
  • Coloured Styrofoam (we can only recycle white) 
  • Wood 
  • Garbage 
  • Oversized plastics, such as lawn furniture, laundry baskets, etc. 
  • Electronic waste 
  • Tires  
  • Medications and needles

Hazardous waste depot

Do not put hazardous waste in your garbage or recycling. 

Hazardous waste drop-off at KARC is open to residents of the City of Kingston and Loyalist Township. It is only collected part of the year and on specific days. Please confirm drop-off times prior to coming. 

Drop-off times: April to November, Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Yard waste drop off

We offer year-round leaf and yard waste drop off at KARC. Residents of Kingston can drop off their leaf and yard waste for free. 

How to drop-off leaf and yard waste 

    1. Go straight through the gates at the end of Lappan’s Lane.
    2. Staff will tell you where to go to unload your leaves and brush. After you are done unloading, you can leave. 

Note: If you are a business, drop-off fees may apply. You may need to weigh-in at the scale prior to dropping off your leaf and yard waste. Please speak with a staff member when you arrive. 

Textiles

You can drop-off textile items, such as old clothing, towels, and rags, at the KARC to help divert them from our landfill! You can also drop off your textiles at Renewal Squared bins, find the bin locations all over the city. 

We have textile donation bins for Diabetes Canada and the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy. Your old clothing, towels, and rags can find new life through reuse. Wearable items will be resold, while others will be turned into rags for sale or insulation material.

Main office

The main office is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and most statutory holidays. Bin pick up or purchase is still available on Saturdays and after 4 p.m. on weekdays by visiting the scale house on the side of the building. 

At our main office you can: 

    • Buy or pick-up a blue box, grey box, and / or green bin 
    • Buy garbage bag tags
    • Get information on our various waste collection and diversion programs 
    • Buy a backyard composter
