Shape Kingston’s forestry future through the Forest Management Strategy
We want to talk trees – and we need you!
The City of Kingston is developing its new Forest Management Strategy, a plan to protect, enhance and maintain Kingston’s urban and rural forests for the next 20 years.
The new Forest Management Strategy will include a strategic framework detailing policy, procedural, operational and regulatory program adjustments towards the achievement of a community-defined rural and urban forest vision. To achieve this, we will assess the current state of Kingston’s forests, hear the community’s needs and aspirations, and establish goals, strategies, actions, indicators and targets to implement over the next 20 years. The new strategy will complement other City policies and objectives including the Official Plan, the Tree Bylaw, and provincial and regional policy direction and legislation.
Visit GetInvolved.CityofKingston.ca for more information and ways to get involved, including in-person events, virtual tools and a nature walk with City forestry staff. Public consultation is open until May 11.
“Trees are important community assets because they provide many environmental, social, and economic benefits, including cooling air temperatures, cleaning air, offering high-quality recreational opportunities and providing habitat for biodiversity,” says Marty Mayberry, Forestry Supervisor, City of Kingston Public Works. “Through the Forest Management Strategy, we will establish a community-supported vision for Kingston’s forests and plan for the future of our trees.”
Developing a new Forest Management Strategy was identified as a priority by City Council in the Strategic Priorities 2023-2026.
