Utilities Kingston is advising electricity customers in the CFB Kingston and Barriefield Village areas of a planned power outage on Monday, March 10, affecting approximately 560 customers as work is completed to improve reliability at the local substation.

There will be two 30-minute power outages: the first at 5:30 a.m. and the second between 3 and 4 p.m.

A map of the affected area is available at Power.UtilitiesKingston.com/Outages. Click on “Schedule | Map or List” for specific locations.

The outage is necessary to install new overhead electrical distribution lines and equipment on behalf of Kingston Hydro Corporation. For the safety of utility crews, equipment must be de-energized to complete the work.

Preparing for the outage

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps:

  • Ensure appliances, such as stoves, are turned off.
  • Fully charge cellphones and extended battery packs.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Use a cooler with ice for items needed during the outage.
  • Plan ahead and consider a source of backup power for important systems, like sump pumps.
  • Do not use a propane barbeque, camp stove or portable standby generator indoors. They can generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Your carbon monoxide detector may not work in an outage.
  • If you plan to use a generator, remember to use it in a dry area outdoors away from any open windows, doors and vents. Visit the Electrical Safety Authority at esasafe.com for more tips.

For those relying on electrically powered medical equipment, consider having the following:

  • A backup phone that does not require electricity.
  • An uninterruptable power supply (UPS), connected at all times.
  • Backup generation available.
  • Alternative arrangements in place, such as staying with family or friends.

Utilities Kingston apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the outage. These upgrades are vital for maintaining a reliable and safe electricity service in our community.
