Local Government Week offers opportunities to get involved

Every year, cities and towns in Ontario celebrate Local Government Week in October. The City of Kingston is acknowledging this week, Oct. 20-26, 2024, by highlighting ways for residents to learn how their government serves them and why involvement in local issues is essential for making positive change.

When the community participates, governments can better understand people's needs and wants. The City of Kingston provides many opportunities for residents to stay informed and share their opinions.

Join a committee or board

Committees and boards share information and offer advice to City Council and staff about different issues that matter to community members in their daily lives. Council usually selects people to join these committees and boards in the fall, but people can express their interest at any time.

Follow along with Council and committees

City Council makes decisions that directly impact residents and visitors. They usually meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at City Hall to discuss various issues, from road repairs to environmental sustainability.

Council agendas, which can be found online, outline the topics council members and the mayor will discuss and make decisions on during each meeting.

You can watch Council and committee meetings at City Hall or from home via livestream.

Speak to council

Community members and groups can express their thoughts or concerns to Council or committees during their meetings.

The City of Kingston acknowledges that we are on the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat, and thanks these nations for their care and stewardship over this shared land.

Today, the City is committed to working with Indigenous peoples and all residents to pursue a united path of reconciliation.
