Kingston welcomes four new family physicians to the community
As part of the City’s ongoing family physician recruitment efforts, four new doctors are being welcomed to the community. The addition of these physicians brings the total number of doctors attracted to Kingston to 20 since the program’s launch in January 2022.
Two of the doctors are recent graduates from the Queen’s School of Family Medicine residency program. The other two are experienced physicians who have relocated from outside the region, one from another province and one from abroad. Three of the four physicians are net new and have been rostering patients using Health Care Connect. By the time rostering is complete, an estimated 3,000 people will have gained access to primary care. One physician is in the process of taking over a practice after the unexpected retirement of an existing doctor, ensuring that 1,100 Kingstonians will not lose access to primary care.
"We're thrilled to welcome four new physicians to Kingston," says Mayor Bryan Paterson. "While our community still has a long way to go to solve this crisis, each new doctor and every patient they serve brings us closer to ensuring that all Kingstonians have access to primary care."
Kingston City Council has invested over $3 million in the family physician recruitment program since 2022. This includes financial incentives to eligible family doctors, a primary care clinic grant to help existing clinics expand their rosters and broaden their services, as well as relocation and career support for incoming physicians and their families. Learn more about the program on the City’s Family Physician Recruitment page.
Primary care remains a matter of provincial jurisdiction. Residents without a family doctor are encouraged to register with Health Care Connect. Health Care Connect is a provincially administered program that helps track primary care provider capacity and connect people to one.
Residents without a family physician can learn more about the support available to help access care and services by visiting the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Ontario Health Team website.
