Kingston adorns fire trucks with students’ fire safety artwork
The next time to see a fire truck in Kingston, you might also learn an important safety tip, courtesy of three local students.
Kingston Fire & Rescue has added artwork to three of their trucks stationed around the city, each decorated with a drawing submitted by a local student that features a fire safety tip or lesson.
KFR held a city-wide art contest through local schools, encouraging students to submit drawings with important fire safety messages. The competition received more than 500 submissions and the top three drawings were selected by a committee at KFR.
Each of the three winning pictures has been emblazoned on a fire truck stationed near the school of the artist. The artwork will be displayed for the next several months.
Members of KFR visited each student at their school to unveil the newly decorated trucks. The trucks and their artwork can be viewed on the Kingston Fire & Rescue Facebook page.
“We were pleased to receive so many outstanding artwork submissions for this contest, all with safety messages and tips that are important for students – and everyone else – to remember,” says Fire Chief Monique Belair. “It was difficult to choose just three winners, but we felt that the pictures from Chloe, Max and Tenley best illustrate the fire safety messages we teach.”
Each winner was surprised at their school with the truck and got to take it for a ride in the area, with their classes cheering them on.
“It’s the first year we’ve held this contest and the reception exceeded our expectations. We’ve heard from other students that they want their drawing on a truck too, so I look forward to seeing even more excellent artwork next year,” says Chief Belair.
Kingston Fire & Rescue visits schools every year to teach fire safety, and many classes visit fire stations to see firefighters in action and learn about their work.
