All Our Relations Land Trust receives donation from Kingston Community Credit Union in support of the Climate Action Fund

Members of the community gathered at All Our Relations Land Trust’s Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden to celebrate the end of a successful Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF) campaign, which culminated with a $5,000 donation from Kingston Community Credit Union.

In total, more than $27,000 was raised to fund the installation of nine solar panels at the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden on Highway 15 which supports a sustainable, holistic and Indigenous-led approach to growing food and medicine for the community.

Jon Dessau, CEO of the Kingston Community Credit Union, is joined by Mayor Bryan Paterson to present a cheque to Shawn Melnyk, Kaitlyn Patterson and Maureen Buchanan of All Our Relations Land Trust.

Following the cheque presentation, volunteers, supporters and community representatives had the chance to learn more about the impact of the donation.
Shawn Melnyk (All Our Relations Land Trust) and Eric Collins (CDK Energy Solutions) educated attendees on how the off-grid solar system operates and how it “will provide essential renewable energy for the existing irrigation system and allow for a long-term transition to battery-operated electric gardening equipment, supporting the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Garden, medicine gardens, a pollinator garden and little forests.”

“This project is an inspiring demonstration of tangible climate action in our community,” says Julie Salter-Keane, Manager of Climate Leadership at the City of Kingston. “The fund was created with the goal of empowering organizations to lead the way with sustainable initiatives, and All Our Relations Land Trust’s environmental stewardship perfectly exemplifies this commitment. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to support their work and we’re looking forward to seeing their impact for years to come.”

About the Kingston Community Climate Action Fund

The KCCAF is an annual campaign that helps community organizations pursue climate action. Each year, the KCCAF allows a registered charity or non-profit organization fund a climate project, empowering them to become part of city-wide solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Kingston Community Credit Union has supported the fund since its inception and matches donations made at their branches, up to $5,000 each year.

Applications for the 2025 KCCAF will open in August 2024. To learn more about eligible projects and how the fund works, visit the City of Kingston’s website. Local organizations can also register for the KCCAF information webinar, taking place on June 25 at 6 p.m.

The City of Kingston acknowledges that we are on the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat, and thanks these nations for their care and stewardship over this shared land.

Today, the City is committed to working with Indigenous peoples and all residents to pursue a united path of reconciliation.
