We have a web cam on the Waaban Crossing that provides a live feed of traffic conditions (check below). You can also check traffic conditions using online mapping and traffic apps such as Google Maps or Waze. In addition to current conditions, these services can also provide estimated travel delays.
LaSalle Causeway
The LaSalle Causeway, owned and operated by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), is a significant transportation link between Kingston’s downtown and east end. The temporary closures of the causeway affect thousands of residents, visitors and businesses. We are committed to ensuring the community is informed about traffic conditions, travel options and collaborative efforts to restore vehicular and active transportation. Please check this page frequently for updates and subscribe to receive news from the City and PSPC.
2025 Temporary closures
It is expected that the causeway will complete the first lift of the season for marine traffic will take place on Saturday, April 19 from 9 a.m. until midnight. The draft 2025 lift operation schedule was developed by PSPC and is subject to approval by Transport Canada.
Travel tips during closures
Montreal Street, John Counter Boulevard, Highway 15 and Waaban Crossing will be temporarily affected during the causeway closures, which may lead to some traffic congestion and travel delays. Here are ways to travel through Kingston during the closures.
What are we doing to help?
We recognize the challenges with traffic in our city and we are taking steps to improve flow, safety, and the overall commute.
Adjusting traffic signals
We continue to monitor and respond to traffic congestion issues from the loss of the causeway as a transportation route, including adjusting traffic signal timing and detouring transit routes. You can also report an issue about traffic signal timing for our consideration.
Adding transit service
Kingston Transit modified and added routes on the east side to maintain connections across the city. On April 19 and on weekends as part of the spring and summer schedule effective May 5, new Route 60 will provide service over the Waaban Crossing, along Highway 15 to Fort Henry. Download the Transit App to plan your trip and access real-time bus arrival times at your bus stop.
Advocacy
We continue to meet with PSPC and advocate for affected residents and businesses. Council delegated authority to the Chief Administrative Officer and designates to waive any applicable City policies and bylaws, including any applicable fees, to support the timely implementation of alternate pedestrian and boat transportation during LaSalle Causeway closures.
During Transport Canada's comment period, we offered input that, if lifts were required, a Sunday lift schedule would provide the least inconvenience for residents, tourists and local businesses.
Enhancing road infrastructure
In August 2024 we completed interim improvements at the Montreal Street and John Counter Boulevard intersection to help manage traffic flow during LaSalle Causeway closures. In March 2025 we began full reconstruction of this intersection. When complete, these changes will improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and travel options for cyclists and pedestrians in the area. There are no planned road closures during construction, but there will be occasional lane reductions that may cause traffic congestion.
We encourage drivers to plan for possible delays and consider alternate routes.
