Community Trees in Trust Program
Applications for the Community Trees in Trust program are closed.
The Community Trees in Trust Program helps people in Kingston organize tree-planting events to increase the number of trees in neighborhoods, aiming to give everyone equal access to the benefits of trees. This idea is known as "tree equity," meaning every community should have enough trees to enjoy cleaner air, cooler temperatures, and greener spaces.
The program provides:
- Free native trees and shrubs (if approved for planting)
- Training and support for planting and tree care
- Delivery of the approved plants
- Mulch and topsoil as needed
- Help with creating and distributing program materials
- Materials to support tree survival during the one-year assessment
Tree equity
To achieve tree equity, we will prioritize applications that:
- Have areas with low tree equity and a high percentage of low-income properties
- Involve planting on many properties
- Encourage community care for trees to help them thrive
- Positively impact the community
Eligibility
Eligible participants must be:
- A community-based not-for-profit group or organization in Kingston with at least one year of experience
- Accountable to and representative of their community
- In good standing with the City of Kingston. This typically means that the community organization is active, has fulfilled partnership requirements, and has no debts or outstanding obligations to the City.
Plan your planting
- Plan community planting events for September 2025 within Kingston boundaries.
- Ensure that trees are planted on privately owned land. You cannot plant on city-owned or managed land, including parks, ravines, natural areas, and along roads.
- Eligible groups need sufficient staff or volunteers to plan, promote, and carry out the planting event.
- Specify one location and day for the supply drop-off. We will deliver trees, shrubs, and, if needed, mulch and soil.
- Check the available tree species from our Neighbourhood Tree Planting Program
