Resident Care Support Volunteer

Become a Resident Program Support Volunteer and assist the Life Enrichment Department at Rideaucrest Home in delivering quality recreational programs for residents. This role is ideal for those who enjoy meaningful interactions, including with residents facing physical or cognitive challenges, and who have strong communication skills and a passion for fostering positive connections.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to residents while attending recreational programs  (approx. 65% of time)
    • Assist in leading group activities (large and medium sized group), including social, emotional, and spiritual programs
    • Engage in on-on-one visits and provide companionship to residents
    • Support residents during tech tutoring sessions or other personalized activities
  • Assist with portering residents to programs and events (approx. 15% of time)
    • Help transport residents to and from various events, activities, or meals
    • Ensure residents are safely and comfortably settled for their activities
  • Help set up and take down programs and events (approx. 5% of time)
    • Assist in preparing spaces for activities and events, including arranging furniture and materials
    • Help clean up after programs, ensuring areas are tidy and ready for the next event
  • Support data collection, surveys, or special projects (approx. 5% of time)
    • Assist Life Enrichment Coordinators with gathering feedback from residents or their families
    • Help with tracking program attendance, resident engagement, or other relevant data
  • Assist with community outings (approx. 5% of time)
    • Help coordinate logistics and ensure residents' needs are met during outings
    • Support residents during excursions, ensuring safety and enjoyment
  • Other duties as assigned (approx. 5% of time)

Qualifications

Required:

  • Enrolled in, or graduate of secondary school 
  • Ability to communicate with diverse populations

Preferred:

  • Currently enrolled in, or completion of post secondary school program
  • Experience in community settings or with elderly/disabled populations
  • Experience with technology such as computers and media devices
  • Certifications in:
    • First aid and CPR
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) 
    • Health-related studies or designations

Other requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Comfort working outdoors in seasonable weather
  • Availability to assist with resident outings and travel to nearby locations
  • Bending, lifting moderate-weight items, crouching, and pushing as necessary. Pushing wheelchairs is often required.
  • Completion of health requirements, including:
    • Negative 2-Step Tuberculosis Testing
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination
  • Adaptability to changes in assignments due to disease outbreaks or resident and facility needs
  • Promptly report hazards, accidents, or personal injuries to supervisors or registered staff
  • Regular weekly time commitment, with options for weekly, bi-weekly, or special event assignments
