Coffee and Gift Shop Attendant Volunteer

Rideaucrest Home features a Coffee and Gift Shop offering refreshments and gift items to residents, families, caregivers, staff, and visitors. Join us to provide excellent customer service and foster meaningful interactions within our community! As a volunteer, you’ll receive comprehensive training in maintaining cleanliness in food preparation and consumption areas of the Coffee Shop.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Sales and customer service  (approx. 30% of time)
    • Assist customers with purchasing gift items and food, including prepackaged, refrigerated, and hot items.
    • Provide excellent customer service to residents, families, caregivers, staff, and community members.
  • Cash and debit/credit machine handling (approx. 30% of time)
    • Operate the cash register and process debit/credit transactions.
    • Ensure accuracy in cash handling and manage the cash register during opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintaining cleanliness (approx. 10% of time)
    • Perform cleaning duties in the kitchen, sales, and seating areas.
    • Follow food safety, infection control, and hand hygiene protocols.
    • Cleaning duties as required.
  • Assisting residents with purchased items (approx. 10% of time)
  • Management of stock items, inventory and display merchandise (approx. 10% of time)
  • Other duties as assigned, adapting to dynamic needs of the facility or community (approx. 10% of time)

Qualifications

Required:

  • Completion of secondary school program
  • Ability to communicate with diverse populations
  • Basic math proficiency for cash handling and transactions
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as standing, bending, lifting, and pushing

Preferred:

  • Currently enrolled in, or completion of post secondary school program
  • Experience in cash handling and operating cash systems
  • Background in food service or community work, particularly with elderly or disabled populations
  • Certifications in:
    • First aid and CPR
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) 
    • Safe Food Handlers Certification

Other requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Bending, lifting moderate-weight items, crouching, and pushing as necessary
  • Completion of health requirements, including:
    • Negative 2-Step Tuberculosis Testing
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination
  • Adaptability to changes in assignments due to disease outbreaks or resident and facility needs
  • Promptly report hazards, accidents, or personal injuries to supervisors or registered staff
  • Regular weekly time commitment with flexibility in scheduling
